M0enopause, which refers to the halting of monthly menstruation in women, is a natural part of the ageing process (usually between the late 40s to early 50s) that happens due to hormonal changes in the body or when a woman undergoes a hysterectomy to remove her uterus. Menopause happens when the ovaries stop producing the reproductive hormones — estrogen and progesterone — and women do not get their periods for 12 consecutive months. Menopause comes with many associated symptoms like “hot flashes, night sweats, headaches, dry skin, weight gain, insomnia, hair fall, irritability, mood swings, loss of interest in sex etc.,” said Dr. Lakshmi Varma K, consultant and advisor at LYEF Wellness. But instead of consuming pills and syrups to manage these symptoms, one can always opt for certain natural remedies — and what better than Ayurveda?
“Ayurveda, being a holistic science, has described many lifestyle changes and medicines for reducing these physical and mental symptoms. This has helped women get through menopause easily. Menopause symptoms can start 2 – 3 years before the complete stoppage of periods and continue up to a few years after. The age of 45 to 55 is the most common time for natural menopause,” added Dr Varma, sharing some such remedies. These include:
Proper diet – During menopause, there are drastic hormonal changes that affect metabolism and make it sluggish. Thus, one should eat things that are easily digestible and metabolism-enhancers. These include leafy vegetables, millet, fresh fruits etc. Avoid very spicy or hot foods, junk foods, processed meats etc.
Proper Exercise – A sluggish metabolism also results in weight gain and accumulation of fat. Exercising for 45 minutes a day can reduce fat accumulation, increase metabolism, and promote proper blood flow.
Some home remedies –
* Daily consumption of amla, in the form of fresh juice or as whole fruit, is very helpful. It is beneficial in maintaining metabolism, preventing hair fall, and preventing other metabolic diseases like diabetes.
*Drinking water boiled with coriander seeds, sarsaparilla roots, ushir roots, or other ingredients can reduce body heat in case of hot flushes and excessive sweating.
* Drinking milk boiled with a few cloves of garlic helps reduce the mental and physical symptoms of menopause.
* Sandalwood paste, aloe vera etc can also be used externally as cooling agents.
Yoga and pranayam – For balancing hormonal changes, there is no better solution than doing yoga and pranayam daily. Yoga asanas help attain stability, strength, and balance physically and mentally. The act of controlled breathing in the form of pranayama calms the mind and reduces irritability, anxiety, mood swings, and other complications of menopause.
Proper knowledge – The last and most important thing is to know the changes during menopause. Understanding that mood swings and anxiety, hot flushes, tiredness, headaches hair loss, weight gain etc are all natural is the first step towards their management.
Echoing something similar, Dr Nitika Kohli, an ayurveda expert, also suggested making the following lifestyle changes to make the transition period smooth.
