Not only a positive mindset, a workout routine, and a healthy breakfast, a good amount of sunshine is equally important to kickstart the day. It’s not just us, even Anushka Sharma believes in soaking up the morning rays to help improve health.
Taking to her Instagram Stories recently, Anushka wrote, “Grab that morning sunlight“.
Why is it useful?
Even in warm weather, morning sunlight is essential for the body owing to its numerous health benefits. “Exposure to morning sunlight plays a crucial role in regulating our internal biological clock, known as the circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm helps synchronise various physiological processes, including sleep-wake cycles, hormone production, and metabolism. By exposing ourselves to natural light in the morning, we help set our internal clock, promoting better sleep quality and overall well-being, said Dr Gaurav Jain, senior consultant, internal medicine, Dharamshila Narayana Superspeciality Hospital.
In addition to circadian rhythm regulation, morning sunlight is a vital source of vitamin D. Notably, vitamin D deficiency is associated with an increased risk of conditions such as osteoporosis, weakened immune system, and mood disorders.
“When the skin is exposed to sunlight, it synthesises vitamin D, which is necessary for calcium absorption, bone health, and immune system function. Therefore, getting morning sunlight helps ensure adequate vitamin D levels, benefiting our overall health,” said Dr Jain.
Moreover, sunlight exposure can help with the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that’s associated with boosting mood and helping a person feel calm and focused, said Dr Rahul Tambe, senior consultant, internal medicine, Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mumbai.
When is a good time?
During hotter months or in regions with intense heat, it is advisable to avoid prolonged direct exposure to the sun from mid-morning to early afternoon when the temperature is highest. “This can help prevent heat-related illnesses, sunburns, and dehydration. Instead, it is preferable to go outside for sun exposure during the earlier hours of the morning or later in the afternoon when the sun is less intense,” Dr Jain said while adding, “The best time for morning sunlight is typically within the first two hours after sunrise”.
The best time to go out in the sun is usually in the early morning, generally before 10 am, when the sun is not too intense, and UV radiation levels are lower. “During this time, sunlight exposure can be beneficial without posing as much of a risk for harmful UV damage,” said Dr Tambe.
For how long?
“Spending around 10-15 minutes in the morning sunlight period can provide significant benefits to the body,” added Dr Jain.
Things to keep in mind
Remember, even while it is necessary and healthy to get sunlight, it’s essential to protect yourself. “Wear protective clothing, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, wear sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays, and stay hydrated. In intense heat, limit your direct exposure to sunlight, spend time in the shade when possible, and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Always listen to your body and take breaks when needed,” Dr Tambe said.
