‘Size zero is not a term I or Bebo coined’: Rujuta Diwekar revisits hype around Kareena Kapoor’s weight loss in Tashan, talks about actor’s fitness in 40s

"I started working with Kareena long before this Tashan thing happened," recollected nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar

Celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar recently revisited the hype that followed Kareena Kapoor’s fitness transformation, popularly called ‘Size Zero’, during the release of her film, Tashan (2008).

“Size zero is not a term that I or Bebo coined. It just happened to come from some media interview. That’s the first time that I figured out that there is something called size zero. It was just a young girl who got in good shape. There was no difference in her size. She did Tashan and Jab We Met at the same time,” Diwekar told content creator Janice Sequeira on her YouTube podcast.

Recalling her journey with Kareena and the recognition that followed, Rujuta called it the “most wonderful thing that happened to me”.

“I started working with Kareena long before this Tashan thing happened. It helped us mainstream the fact that she ate dal, chawal and parathas and looked the way she did. She was also 27 at that time. But the big thing is that today she is in her 40s. She still looks just as fresh, just as fit, looks fab, and follows her heart. That’s what health and fitness actually looks like — where you have a complete life not just in terms of how you look but also what you do in your life – relationships, work, your children, the way you conduct your life…so I feel fortunate to have had that opportunity and for the fact that she was so open about it and spoke about it so openly. She didn’t need to talk about me at all, but she did.”

Taking a cue from her candid confession, let’s understand how good health is all about maintaining a balance and not going overboard.

Ageing gracefully is a deeply personal journey that goes far beyond physical appearance—especially for women navigating the complex hormonal changes that come with time. Consultant dietitian, Kanikka Malhotra, shared that how the pressures of chasing unrealistic ideals like “size zero” can add unnecessary stress, especially during phases like perimenopause and menopause when the metabolism, mood, and energy levels fluctuate. “These changes are natural and deserve empathy, not judgment,” she told indianexpress.com.

Malhotra stressed that sustainable health and vitality are a result of nourishing the body with balanced meals rich in whole grains, plant-based proteins, healthy fats, and vibrant fruits and vegetables—not from starving yourself or chasing unrealistic body sizes.

“Supporting hormone balance through adequate nutrition, managing stress, staying physically active, and getting restful sleep empowers women to feel strong, radiant, and confident at every age,” said Malhotra.

Behind every number on the scale or clothing tag lies a unique story of resilience and evolution.

“Real wellness embraces this story: respecting the body’s needs, honouring its changes, and cultivating self-love that runs deeper than any fad. Women deserve to celebrate their strength, wisdom, and beauty as they age, rather than measure their worth by transient trends. Ageing gracefully means thriving in your own skin with vitality, balance, and joy—and that is the ultimate marker of true health,” said Malhotra.
