Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and MLA Aaditya Thackeray on Tuesday stepped up his criticism of the Election Commission, saying there were “serious and shocking” errors in the draft voter lists for municipal corporations in Maharashtra, especially for the BMC polls.
He demanded that the Election Commission extend the time allowed for people to file objections and corrections.
Speaking at a press conference in Mumbai, Thackeray said his party has checked the draft lists ward by ward and found large gaps, incorrect entries and repeated names.
The former Maharashtra minister said that while the Election Commission said there were 11 lakh names repeated, the actual repeats marked in the lists crossed 14 lakh. He said many people were incorrectly marked as repeats simply because they had common Marathi names, even though they were different individuals. He added that around 50,000 names that were actually repeated were not flagged at all.
Thackeray claimed names of many voters who died years ago continued to appear in booth-level lists. “In some cases their families have even submitted death certificates, but the names remain. Some have been shown as voting too,” he said.
He added that his party found more than 30,000 names that were added after the Election Commission’s declared cut-off date of July 1, 2025. “How did these names enter the list after the cut-off?” he asked.
A major concern he raised was the shortage of booth level officers (BLOs) in Mumbai. Thackeray said that due to the lack of staff, some people who could not read or write were asked to visit homes and verify voter information. “It is not their fault. But how can someone who cannot read the voter list be asked to check it?” he asked.
Thackeray said his party filed 3,000–4,000 objections in each of Mumbai’s 227 wards after checking the lists through its office-bearers and volunteers.
Giving examples, he said party MLC Sunil Shinde’s name appeared seven times in the draft list, each time with a different age, photo and address. Former Mumbai mayor Shraddha Jadhav’s name appeared eight times, he said. Congress MLA Jyoti Gaikwad and Mumbai South Central MP Anil Desai, he said, names were entered on the lists multiple times.
“There are dead voters and repeat voters in every booth,” he said.
