Rahul Gandhi enjoys food with Kunal Vijayakar (Source: Kunal Vijayakar/Instagram) Rahul Gandhi, who has opened up about his love for food on several occasions, recently went on a food walk in Delhi with food journalist Kunal Vijayakar during which he enjoyed a range of scrumptious dishes and also shared his culinary preferences. As the duo walked through the streets of the National Capital — from Bengali Market to Old Delhi — to enjoy some popular dishes, the politician confessed that he last ate street food a year or two back.
“Kulfi, aloo tikki, chaat, etc are my favourites,” he said, adding that he developed a love for aloo tikki during his time in boarding school. “When I was in a boarding school, we used to have a truck shop there; that’s where I started to like aloo ki tikki. It was very good.”
Opening about his earliest food memories in Delhi, the politician revealed that he used to go to Fujiya, a restaurant that serves Chinese and Japanese cuisines, with his father. For Rahul, his mother Sonia Gandhi, is the best cook, he said, adding that he mostly eats at his mother’s or sister’s place. “I make one of the best omelettes,” Rahul said, sharing that he often ends up eating this egg preparation when he comes home late.
So, what does Rahul prefer — tea or coffee? While he enjoys coffee in the morning, tea is what he likes to sip on in the evenings. Also, he prefers Indian mithai and sweet foods over French desserts and spicy items, respectively. And, as per the Gandhi scion, “Lalu Prasad Yadav makes great food.”
On being asked about his top three Indian cuisines, Rahul replied, “I like South Indian food. I like Punjabi cuisine, such as chhole bhature, paranthas, etc. “My favourite dishes are tandoori chicken and butter chicken.”
Admitting that he pays attention to his health and fitness, Rahul said, “I have got a rule that I’ll spend an hour a day exercising.”
Prior to this, Rahul had revealed that when at home, he doesn’t eat rice or roti. “When I am at home, I am pretty strict. So, I am careful. I don’t eat all sorts of stuff. I don’t eat carbohydrates — no rice, no roti,” he said, adding that if given a choice, and forced to eat, “I would eat roti probably”.

“Normally in our house, we have desi khaana at lunch and some sort of continental stuff at dinner. I am quite particular. I have a controlled diet. So, mine is pretty boring. I try to avoid too many sweet things,” he said in a conversation with food and travel portal Curly Tales at a campsite in a village in Rajasthan.
However, Rahul enjoys not just eating different cuisines, but also trying his hands at cooking. Something similar was seen when he was on his Bharat Jodo Yatra during which he was seen dabbling in cooking with tribal women in Andole village.
In a video released by him on Youtube, Rahul was seen preparing bamboo chicken, known popularly as ‘bongu chicken’. The Congress MP mixed chilli, salt, turmeric, and other ingredients into the chicken pieces and placed them inside a bamboo stick, before roasting them on burning charcoal. The politician, along with the women and other state party leaders, was also seen eating the dish and interacting with them.
Earlier, he joined the chefs of the popular cooking show ‘Village Cooking Channel’ during his Tamil Nadu visit for an election campaign. On the show, he sat along with the locals and helped make mushroom biryani.
Last year, he was also seen enjoying a tall glass of falooda ahead of election results. “Many flavours of Wayanad!” He captioned the post.
