Meghan Markle tied the knot with Prince Harry in May 2018 (Source: AP/File)When Meghan Markle tied the knot with Prince Harry in May 2018, she commissioned Violet Cakes in East London to create her delicious and beautiful wedding cake. Talking about the same, owner Claire Ptak reveals that she was given complete creative freedom by the Duchess of Sussex. “Meghan, she specifically said to me, ‘I don’t want to tell you what to do…,” Ptak told Tatler.
She added: “The reason why I’ve chosen you is because I love your baking and your work and your point of view and your ethos. And I was like, ‘Oh my god, that’s so cool. The best job brief ever!'”
This isn’t the first time that Meghan and the baker connected. Earlier, the former actor had interviewed her for her now-defunct lifestyle blog, The Tig, which she discontinued before marrying into the royal family. Ptak revealed that she selected six choices for Prince Harry and Meghan to try.
“They did the tastings… and they picked the lemon and elderflower, which was my first choice as well,” she recounted. The cake consisted of several layers and was made using Amalfi lemons and elderflower syrup sourced from Queen Elizabeth’s Sandringham estate.

Prior to the wedding, the baker told The Daily Mail, “It’s a lemon sponge, a special sponge that I developed just for the couple, and we drizzle the layers with elderflower cordial from the Sandringham estate, so it’s really lovely and as local as you can get.” She decorated the dessert in elderflower Swiss meringue buttercream and adorned it with 150 fresh flowers, including three different types of peonies and roses.
The entire process of conceptualising, baking, and designing the cake required six bakers and took five days to prepare in the kitchen at Buckingham Palace. Each slice is estimated to cost about $100 per slice and over $62,000 to make the entire cake, according to the outlet.
Apart from including a recipe for the cake in her new book, Ptak again made it for the couple last summer for their daughter Princess Lilibet’s first birthday. She shared a glimpse of the cake on her Instagram, saying, “It was an absolute pleasure to make this special cake last week for Lilibet’s birthday. Wishing her a very happy year ahead!”
