During the summer, many people — after waiting for an entire year — cannot get enough of mangoes and go overboard. Result: excessive gas and bloating. But worry not, we have a tried-and-tested remedy. In a conversation with Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi actor Manmeet Singh, fellow actor Manoj Joshi shared a traditional nuska or home remedy that he said Gujaratis have been following for a long time. According to the Devdas star, adding a pinch of dry ginger or saunth with salt in aamras helps prevent gas. “There won’t be formation of gas. Gujaratis always add these. Dry ginger is a digestive agent which is good for the summer,” he shared.

As such, we wanted to understand how effective this hack is. For that, let’s understand how the individual ingredients — dry ginger powder and salt — work in the body.

Ginger’s digestive power

Ginger is known for its carminative properties, which means it helps expel gas from the digestive tract. Studies suggest ginger can relax the digestive muscles and ease bloating. Dry ginger, in particular, might be more concentrated than fresh ginger in these properties, said Dr Sangeeta Tiwari, clinical nutritionist, Artemis Lite NFC, New Delhi.

Salt, on the other hand, plays a more indirect role. “Sodium in salt helps draw water into the digestive system, potentially aiding in the movement of food and reducing bloating,” said Dr Tiwari.

So, is the remedy useful?

According to Dr Tiwari, there’s limited scientific evidence directly testing the effectiveness of ginger and salt in preventing gas when having aamras. “However, the individual properties of these ingredients suggest a potential benefit,” said Dr Tiwari.

Adding a small amount of dry ginger and salt to your aamras recipe is a reasonable approach to try. “If it works for you, great! However, it’s not a guaranteed solution. Listen to your body and adjust the amount based on your taste and tolerance,” said Dr Tiwari.

Dr Tiwari stressed that moderation is key. “Enjoy your aamras, and if gas persists, consult a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying issues,” said Dr Tiwari.
