VJ Bani J, a fitness buff, recently opened up about her choice of breakfast. In a conversation with satirist Cyrus Broacha, the Four More Shots, Please actor said, “Bone broth. I make it at home. I just have it every morning to break my fast. It is very good for you, for the skin.”

What exactly is bone broth?

Bone broth is a nutrient-packed liquid made by simmering animal bones. “It offers a range of potential health benefits, including improved gut health, stronger joints, and healthier skin and hair. Drinking bone broth as part of your breakfast can provide these benefits, but there are a few things to consider before making it a daily habit,” said Rashi Chahal, nutritionist, La Femme.

Benefits

Packed with nutrients

*Collagen: Bone broth is an excellent source of collagen, which supports joint health, boosts skin elasticity, and strengthens hair and nails.
*Amino acids: The gelatin in bone broth breaks down into amino acids like proline and glycine, which play a key role in digestion, reducing inflammation, and helping tissue repair.
*Minerals: Bone broth provides essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium, which are important for bone health and proper muscle function.

Supports digestive health

*The gelatin in bone broth can help maintain the integrity of your gut lining, making it beneficial for people with digestive issues like leaky gut syndrome, said Chahal.
Glycine, an amino acid found in bone broth, supports detoxification and aids in digestion.

Joint health support

*According to Chahal, bone broth’s collagen content may help reduce joint pain, stiffness, and inflammation, which makes it a great option for those dealing with conditions like arthritis.

Enhances skin health

Collagen is crucial for keeping skin firm and elastic. Drinking bone broth regularly can help keep your skin youthful by reducing wrinkles over time.

Hydration

Bone broth is not only a comforting beverage but also a good way to stay hydrated. “The electrolytes present, such as sodium and potassium, help replenish fluids, making it a great option if you’re feeling dehydrated,” said Chahal.

Things to consider

Calories and nutritional balance

While bone broth is low in calories, it isn’t a complete meal on its own. “It lacks fibre and carbs and doesn’t provide a high dose of protein. If you’re having it for breakfast, pair it with other nutrient-rich foods, like eggs, avocado, vegetables, or whole-grain toast to ensure you’re getting a balanced meal,” said Chahal.

Sodium content

Some commercial bone broths can be quite high in sodium, which may not be suitable for people with high blood pressure or heart issues. To control sodium, make your own broth or opt for low-sodium versions, said Chahal.

Potential for heavy metals

Some animal bones, especially from larger animals, might contain trace amounts of heavy metals like lead. “It’s important to source your bones from reliable, high-quality sources—ideally pasture-raised or grass-fed animals—so you can minimise this risk,” Chahal said.
