Our hands and arms are involved in various tasks these days from gripping a steering wheel to typing on a keyboard. These repetitive motions can create weakness and stiffness in your wrists, arms, and fingers.

Practicing simple stretching exercises can help prevent injury, just like Shilpa Shetty Kundra demonstrated. The Sukhee actor, who is a big fitness enthusiast, is always ready to undertake some fun fitness challenges every once in a while. If you too are keen, her recent fitness challenge called for demonstrating your biceps and wrists mobility, which according to the actor is a sure shot way to get in some stretching for the overworked limbs.

“#SSKsFitnessChallenge: Biceps-and-wrists mobility! This stretch displays the mobility of your biceps and wrists. @clubrpm couldn’t do it (because usually, men who are into weight training might find it difficult to do this one). But let’s see if you can do it!” she said in a post on Instagram.

How to perform the challenge?

This exercise makes use of both your arms stretched outwards while placing one side of the other in such a way that fingers get crisscrossed. “Then you have to rotate the arms inwards and feel the stretch on your biceps and wrist,” shared fitness expert Garima Goyal.

According to Goyal, the upper body movement expands and contracts the forward-facing muscles of your upper arm, called the biceps brachii.

“The biceps muscle consists of the long head and short head, which work in tandem to support elbow flexion and shoulder lifts. Stretching your biceps activates the muscle, stimulates blood flow, and can increase your range of motion and flexibility,” Goyal mentioned.

When to perform it?

Some people perform such stretches as a warm-up or cool down before or after an upper-body workout routine or standalone wellness activity, Goyal said.

Why do it?

Apart from flexibility, the daily body movements involving arms improve. “Also range of motion is enhanced allowing you to move deeper and further with greater ease. Stretching not only complements the workout but also plays an essential part in a well-rounded exercise program,” Goyal said, adding that the stretch reduces muscle tightness and tension.

What’s more?

Easy and convenient to perform without the need for any equipment, the stretch helps to stimulate the muscles of your biceps and wrists and also reduces muscular tension, thus enhancing blood flow to the area.

If you feel a lot of stiffness or tightness in your arms or are about to do an arm workout and want to perform as much of the motion as possible, bicep and wrist stretches are a great way to relieve tightness and increase the short-term range of motion. “The benefits of an extended range of motion include increased comfort; a greater ability to move freely; and a lessening of the susceptibility to soft tissue injuries like muscle and tendon strains,” Goyal said.

By increasing muscle length and range of motion, we are increasing the distance over which the muscles are able to contract.

“This results in a potential increase to the muscle power and therefore increases athletic ability, while also leads to an improvement in dynamic balance, or the ability to control the muscles,” said Goyal.
