How important is it for women to exercise during pregnancy?
“During pregnancy, it is advised to do yoga, walking, jogging, and pelvic floor exercises known as Kegels,” said Dr Shobha Gupta, medical director, Gynecologist and IVF Specialist at Mother’s Lap IVF Centre New Delhi and Vrindavan.
According to Dr Gupta, in the third trimester (weeks 28 to 40), as long as one feels well and is at ease, one can continue working out. “You can continue to be active up until the delivery of your child if you feel okay. Continue engaging in low-impact exercises like walking and light stretching,” said Dr Gupta.
In order to prevent long-term issues like uterovaginal prolapse, a condition where the uterus loses its flexibility, be sure to include pelvic floor exercises or kegels in your routine, mentioned Dr Gupta. “In addition, these exercises aid in preventing and limiting urinary incontinence, a condition in which pee leaks after coughing or sneezing,” said Dr Gupta.
What to keep in mind?
Varun Rattan, NASM Certified Nutrition Coach shared that pregnant women should avoid high-impact exercises such as jumping or other plyometric activities. “Exercises that involve lying on the back for extended periods of time can cause hypotension and must be avoided as well,” said Rattan.
