Sneakers are enjoying their moment under the spotlight, and retro pieces are making a solid comeback. With pairs flying off shelves in no time and limited-edition models skyrocketing in price, footwear designed primarily for athleisure has solidly cemented its place in fashion history. Forget boomers and millennials, it is Gen Z who’s spearheading this sweeping trend. We found out why.

Why is Gen Z obsessed with retro sneakers?

“Gen Z has fallen in love with the decades they never lived through, romanticising the effortless cool of the ’80s, ’90s, and early 2000s. And retro sneakers are their choice of accessory, offering a sense of borrowed nostalgia wrapped in comfort and authenticity,” said Shilpa GNS, costume designer.

As athleisure blurred the boundaries between gymwear and streetwear, sneakers moved beyond their sporting origins to become expressions of identity, taste, and mood.

“Clean lines, vintage silhouettes, and muted palettes perfectly capture the generation’s quiet shift from hype to heritage, a celebration of timelessness over trend,” said Shilpa, who believes that reissued classics echo Gen Z’s evolving values: sustainability, longevity, and thoughtful consumption. They represent fashion that doesn’t chase virality but holds meaning.

How can you style them?

Styling retro sneakers is about blending vintage attitude with modern ease. Their nostalgic silhouettes make them adaptable to almost any look, from streetwear to smart casual.

“Try pairing sleek low-tops with straight jeans, a classic white tee, and a tailored jacket for an understated, timeless edge,” said Shilpa, adding that for a more urban look, combine chunky retro trainers with relaxed cargos and oversized hoodies to balance proportion and attitude. Soft neutrals —beige, cream, and grey — channel quiet sophistication, while pops of colour bring back early-2000s energy, she suggested.

“When paired with structured trousers and a button-up shirt, retro sneakers lend polish without losing comfort. They even offset flowy skirts or dresses with a touch of grounded nonchalance,” said the designer. The secret lies in contrast, mixing refined pieces with the relaxed spirit of sneakers, creating looks that feel current, authentic, and effortlessly cool across seasons.

Getting started

For anyone stepping into the world of retro sneakers, Shilpa recommended beginning with silhouettes that stand the test of time rather than chasing bold logos. “Opt for sleek, low-profile designs that work effortlessly with denim, skirts, or tailored separates,” she said.

According to her, court sneakers bring a refined touch, vintage runners add sporty nostalgia, and chunky shapes channel streetwear confidence. Canvas options keep things airy and laid-back. Start with neutral hues —white, cream, or grey —before experimenting with statement colours, she added. Retro sneakers aren’t just nostalgic pieces; they’re modern wardrobe essentials that fuse comfort, versatility, and timeless appeal in every step.
