Under fire ever since the multi-crore dal scam surfaced, the Orissa government said on Tuesday they will involve Women Self-Help Groups (WSHGs) in feeding programmes for pregnant women and school children.

“The state government aims to involve WSHGs in mid-day meal scheme in all the primary schools across Orissa,” Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said while inaugurating a function marking the state-level celebration of the International Women’s Day.

Pointing that further decentralisation was required in the feeding programmes,Patnaik said that the WSHGs would be involved in other welfare activity sectors like health, sanitation, literacy campaign and nutrition feeding programmes.

Addressing a large gathering of women, mostly members of the WSHGs here,Women and Child Welfare Minister Prafulla Samal admitted “irregularities” in the implementation of mid-day meal scheme for children and supplementary nutrition programme (SNP) for pregnant women.

“The irregularities took place due to poor monitoring and surveillance in the feeding programmes for the children and women,” Samal admitted adding that the state government had meanwhile taken several steps to correct the mistake made in the dual feeding programmes.
