West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was today greeted with black flags by some youths at R Ahmed Dental College here, where he went to inaugurate a new building.
Alleging that the building was being inaugurated despite being incomplete, the youths claiming to be students of the college staged a brief protest-demonstration showing black flags to the chief minister,as soon as he entered the campus.
Bhattacharjee, apparently unmoved by the resentment, went on to inaugurate the building, which has come up at a cost of Rs 11 crore.
“There are criticisms, but these have to be taken in stride and complaints looked into,” he said after inaugurating the new building where there would be provisions for emergency dental care.
Bhattacharjee stressed on a more disciplined staff and better care to patients at government hospitals.
There have been several complaints against government hospitals by patients and their relatives of turning away serious patients, bad infrastructure and ill-behaviour by a section of doctors, nurses and other staff.
The chief minister, however, lauded the doctors of government hospitals, saying they were doing a very good job in providing healthcare to a large percentage of population in West Bengal.
He said that around 72 per cent patients are treated by government hospitals in the urban areas and around 80 to 90 per cent of all patients avail treatment at government facilities in rural areas.
Admitting that there was a dearth of qualified doctors,Bhattacharjee said that three upcoming medical colleges would churn out 300 more doctors every year, thus easing the strain.
