Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday wished Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his birthday and also “drew his attention” to “a series of highly objectionable, violent and rude statements being made against the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi”.
In a letter to the PM, Kharge said, “The violent language used by the leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party and your alliance parties is dangerous for the future.” “The world is shocked that the Minister of State for Railways in the Central Government, a minister from BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh, is calling the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha “number one terrorist”. An MLA from an alliance party in your government in Maharashtra is announcing a reward of Rs 11 lakh to the person who ‘cuts off the tongue’ of the Leader of the Opposition. A BJP leader and former MLA in Delhi is threatening to make his ‘fate like Dadi (Indira Gandhi)’,” wrote the Congress chief in his letter.
“Crores of Congress workers and leaders are very agitated and worried about this matter. Due to such hate-mongering forces, Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi had to sacrifice their lives. This political behavior of ruling party is most rude example in democratic history,” said Kharge.
Kharge wrote that he expects the PM to “impose discipline and decorum on your leaders”. “Strict legal action should be taken for such statements so that Indian politics can be prevented from becoming degenerate. Nothing untoward happens,” he said. “I trust that you will take the required action to ensure that these leaders immediately stop making violent statements,” he said.
Reacting to PM Modi’s statement that the Congress was “rattled” because of his participation in Ganesh Puja, Congress MP and general secretary in-charge of organisation K C Venugopal said “the difference between true bhakti and misuse of religion for politics is not hidden from anyone”.
“Just when Maharashtra elections are around the corner, the non-biological PM decides to go with an elaborate camera crew, in full Maharashtrian attire, for the Ganesh Puja… Not only that, this is to the CJI’s house, in contravention of all principles of judicial separation. Did the PM not think about what message is going across,” Venugopal said.
In his post on X, the Congress leader said “such proximity between the chiefs of the executive and the judiciary raises doubts about the PM’s intentions”. “The BJP-RSS’ disregard for institutional integrity and constitutional values is well known, which raises further questions about why the PM chose to make this visit,” he wrote. “Mr Prime Minister, stop misusing Lord Ganesha to deflect from the genuine questions raised about your impropriety,” he said.
