As many as 2,230 people have been convicted and 371 arrested in cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) between 2011 and May 31 this year.
Also, the CBI has registered 2,220 cases under under the Act in the same period. This was stated by MoS (Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions) Jitendra Singh in Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
Singh informed that the government has strengthened the probe agency by creating 715 posts at various levels since 2010. “Deputation of officers other than IPS has been ensured at the level of Superintendent of Police to Joint Director in the CBI by amendment of Recruitment Rules thereby making the agency multidisciplinary,” Singh, who also holds the portfolio of MoS (PMO), stated.
The minister said in order to facilitate speedy trial of cases investigated by the CBI, the government has sanctioned 92 additional special courts out of which 76 additional special courts have become operational. In response to another question, Singh said as on May 31 this year, a total 1,122 cases were pending with the CBI for investigation.
“Out of them, 11 cases are pending with CBI for investigation for more than three years,” the minister stated. Having maintained a conviction rate of 67 per cent in 2011 and 2012, the CBI improved its conviction rate to 68.62 per cent in 2013. Till May 31 this year, it has had a conviction rate of 69.65 per cent, the minister stated.
