Cong,PMK woo PMC for support

Both Congress and PMK,which recently left UPA to join the AIADMK led alliance, wooed the regional party Puducherry Munnetra Congress for lone Puducherry LS seat.

Bracing for a close contest, both Congress and PMK,which recently left UPA to join the AIADMK led alliance, wooed the regional party Puducherry Munnetra Congress,(PMC) to get its support to win the lone Lok Sabha seat from the Union Territory.

Though the Congress is yet to finalise its nominee, local Congress leaders,as well as leaders of PMK,which renominated its sitting member,M Ramadoss to contest the seat, sought the support of PMC Leader and former Home Minister P Kannan.

Kannan, who floated the PMC some years ago after breaking away from the Congress, called for a meeting of his party’s senior leaders to decide on the poll strategy. The party has three members in the territorial assembly.

The Congress is yet to nominate its candidate, though speculation is rife that it plans to field Union Minister of State for Planning and Parliamentary Affairs V Narayanasamy.

Currently a Rajya Sabha member,he never contested any Assembly or Lok Sabha poll in his two decade old political career.

Congress, which heads the territorial government, has the onerous responsibility of ensuring unity in the faction ridden local party unit. The intense faction fued last year resulted in the replacement of N Rangasamy led ministry with a government led by the present incumbent,V Vaithilingam.

Rangasamy had been distancing himself from party activities and had not attended any of Assembly meetings.

PMK has already started its campaign, focussing on the ‘achievements’ of its candidate.
