Chargesheet in 2G case to be filed soon

The Enforcement Directorate and the income tax department will file their chargesheet in the 2G scam “very soon.”

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the income tax (I-T) department will file their chargesheet in the 2G scam “very soon.” A senior government official confirmed this to FE on the condition of anonymity.

He said the chargesheet will be filed against various persons, and not just against one individual. According to sources, the chargesheet could name former telecom minister A Raja and some current and former officials in the Department of Telecommunications, besides some corporate executives.

According to the official, over 5,000 hours of conversation were taped and those released to the media were just a small segment of this. While the conversations which rocked the media are those that Niira Radia had with various journalists, politicians, bureaucrats and others, the real taps give out information about hawala transactions and income tax evasion.

Following the leads, both the ED and the IT department carried out investigations to corroborate the evidence they got from the tapes. The timing of the CBI raids on A Raja are significant in this context.

While the CAG report spoke of a Rs 1.76 lakh crore loss to the exchequer, the I-T department’s aim was to trace the beneficial owners of some of the companies that were awarded the licences. Some of the firms involved in the scam are believed to be located in Dubai.

The probe will reveal the source of funding for some firms which had little networth when they applied for licences but soon arranged funds. The probe is also believed to have revealed how payments were made to various officials.
