The BJP Tuesday lodged a complaint with Election Commission regarding an advertisement issued by the Congress that appeared below the masthead in some dailies. The advertisement in Hindi read: ‘Rajasthan mein Congress ki lehar (Congress wave in Rajasthan)’.
A party delegation led by Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya complained the placement of the advertisement was aimed at creating an impression that this was a story or opinion “published by the newspaper agency after a survey”.
The publisher’s byline, the complaint said, was in such a small font the reader would find it impossible to know the source of advertisement, which had appeared in The Times of India and Dainik Bhaskar.
BJP demanded stringent action against Congress, and also against the two newspapers that published it. It also sought direction to the Congress to place an advertisement to declare “there was no Congress wave in Rajasthan”, and an apology from the newspapers for publishing it.
In a second complaint, BJP flagged another Congress ad, asking voters to give a missed call to register for getting benefits of the guarantees promised by the party. According to the complaint, the ad was published by Rajasthan Patrika, and The Indian Express; and also appeared on Twitter, online websites, audio message, etc.
