Finfluencer Abhishek Kar accused of ‘spreading misinformation’ about Assam, state govt directs police to take action

A clip from a recent YouTube podcast in which Kar was a guest was flagged by the Office of the Chief Minister on Friday evening. The clip was shared by multiple Assam-based social media platforms.

A video from a YouTube channel ,named Riya Upreti, is in circulation where an individual named Abhishek Kar is seen making unacceptable comments on Assam’s history and traditions.

“A video from a YouTube channel, named Riya Upreti, is in circulation where an individual named Abhishek Kar is seen making unacceptable comments on Assam’s history and traditions. Appropriate action may be initiated against the said individual for spreading misinformation,” read a post on X by the official handle of the Chief Minister of Assam’s Office, tagging the Assam Police.

In the clip, Kar can be heard talking about Mayong village in Assam’s Morigaon district. He could be heard claiming that the women there have such power “that you go there as a person, they can convert you into a goat or any other animal, and then at night, turn you into a person again and have sambhog with you. Why? Because there are a lot of tantric practises…”

The Mayong region in Central Assam has long been associated with mysticism and ‘magic’ practices, but these are largely centred on folk medicine.

Abhishek Kar has his own YouTube channel, with 1.86 million subscribers, in which he uploads videos giving advice on the stock market, trading, finance and business. He has 2.9 million followers on Instagram.
