The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday announced the dissolution of its Goa unit including its executive committee, except for the position of state president. The move is aimed at revamping and restructuring the party’s organizational structure in the coastal state ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

“The party hereby dissolves the present organisation in the state of Goa with immediate effect,” the party said in a release on twitter.

“Amit Palekar will continue to function as the state president. The new organizational structure will be announced soon,” the release added.

The move comes days after senior Goa leaders were summoned to Delhi for a meeting with AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal and other senior party leaders.

The party, which had failed to win a single seat in Goa in 2017, had made its entry into the state by winning two seats in South Goa – Velim and Benaulim – in the 2022 Assembly elections. In Benaulim, AAP candidate Venzy Viegas had defeated former chief minister Churchill Alemao, who had contested the polls on Trinamool Congress (TMC) ticket while in Velim, Cruz Silva from AAP had defeated Congress’s Savio D’ Silva.

Amit Palekar, the Goa unit’s president, told The Indian Express, “All the units have been disbanded. There will be a complete revamp. We want to strengthen the party’s presence at the grassroots level and focus on expansion. We want seriousness in the party. After the last elections, several leaders were appointed. We do not want any lethargy, so a restructuring will be done and the new structure will be announced soon.”
