Here’s how to check Aadhaar-linked SIM cards and port without changing number

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recently implemented new regulations under the Ninth Amendment to prevent fraudulent SIM swapping, which is also known as Mobile Number Portability (MNP).

This step was taken in response to a letter from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), which stated that criminals and fraudsters were fraudulently porting out mobile connections through fraudulent SIM swaps or replacements. Starting on July 1, 2024, users will have to wait seven days after a SIM swap or mobile number replacement to be eligible for network portability.

To ensure transparency and security in mobile connection management, here is a step-by-step guide on how one can check the number of SIM cards issued on one’s Aadhaar and how one can port to a new telecom operator without changing the number.

How to check SIM cards issued on one’s Aadhaar:

Step 1: Visit Sanchar Sathi’s official website: https://www.sancharsaathi.gov.in/ to start the process.

Step 2: Navigate through the home page, find and click on ‘Know your mobile connections.’

Step 3: Enter your mobile number in the designated field on the portal and enter the captcha code.

Step 4: Click on ‘Request OTP’ on your mobile number.

Step 5: Enter the received OTP in the specified field for verification.

Step 6: Once verified, the portal will display the list of mobile numbers issued under your UID number. Review the list to ensure that all connections are authorised by you.

Step 7: If you find any unauthorised numbers, you can report them directly through the portal for further action.

By checking the SIM cards issued under Aadhaar, one can ensure all the connections are linked to one’s identity, promoting transparency and security in mobile usage and allowing individuals to monitor and manage their mobile connections.

How to port one’s mobile number:

Step 1: To generate a Unique Porting Code (UPC), send an SMS to 1900 with the text ‘PORT’ followed by your 10-digit mobile number, like ‘PORT xxxxxxxxxx’.

Step 2: After submitting a porting request, you will receive an 8-digit UPC (Unique Porting Code) from your current telecom operator on your registered mobile number. This code will be valid for 4 days across India and 30 days for Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, and the North East. Assam, and the North East.

Step 3: Next, visit the nearest store or outlet of the service provider you wish to switch to. Provide them with your UPC and fill out the Customer Application Form (CAF), the required documents, and the CAF (Customer Agreement Form).

Step 4: For KYC, submit documents like identity and address proof documents along with the last bill payment copy of the postpaid number and passport-size photos.

Step 5: Once approved, the new service provider will issue a new SIM card, which will be activated after the porting process is completed.

Step 5: Process: The porting process typically takes 3-5 working days to complete. During this time, your old SIM will continue to work until the new SIM is activated.

Step 6: Once the porting process is complete, your new SIM will be activated, and you can start using your existing number with the new service provider.
