How can one create a high-octane show set in Bengal without bringing on board the Bengal Tiger? Even if the original big cats aren’t free, it is essential to rope in at least the human embodiment of the majestic name and that’s precisely what Neeraj Pandey and streaming giant Netflix have done for their upcoming crime thriller Khakee: The Bengal Chapter.

On Monday, the makers unveiled a promotional video featuring former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly, affectionately known as Dada and the Bengal Tiger, instantly capturing the attention of netizens. “You are making a show about Bengal and didn’t invite Dada,” he asks before making a dramatic entrance in a police uniform, taking everyone by surprise.

As casting discussions progress, the team decides he would be best suited for the role of a strict and upright police officer, which he readily accepts. To help him channel the right amount of aggression, the director advises him to draw from a past experience and Ganguly immediately recalls his infamous feud with former Indian cricket team coach Greg Chappell. The mere thought of Chappell reignites his fury and Dada roars.

However, it doesn’t quite have the impact he had hoped for, prompting the crew to film action sequences instead. Wielding a lathi like a cricket bat, Ganguly delivers a series of cover drives, pulls, hooks and lift shots on a criminal. While the team is impressed, they urge him to increase his speed and embody the swagger of SP Amit Lodha IPS (played by Karan Tacker in Khakee: The Bihar Chapter). Realising that this might be a big challenge, Ganguly ultimately agrees to contribute by promoting the show instead, setting the stage for the release of Khakee: The Bengal Chapter.

Starring Jeet, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Parambrata Chatterjee and Chitrangada Singh in key roles, Khakee: The Bengal Chapter is a standalone sequel to Khakee: The Bihar Chapter. Created by Pandey and directed by Debatma Mandal and Tushar Kanti Ray, the show is set to premiere on Netflix on March 20.
