Kajol on her role in The Trial: ‘You will like her but hate some of her decisions’
On Monday, the trailer of The Trial, headlined by Kajol, was released. At the trailer launch event, the actor spoke about her character in the web series.

After impressing the world with her power-packed performances in films, Kajol is all set to venture into the web space with The Trial: Pyaar, Kaanoon, Dhokha. An adaptation of The Good Wife, the Suparn Varma show will see her play a lawyer.
At the trailer launch of The Trial, Kajol revealed that she has watched the original series and ‘loved it’. The actor added that she did have her share of questions about how it would be adapted in Hindi.
“The character was amazing; the concept was fabulous but I did have a question about how it would be adapted in Hindi. That’s when Suparn came, the narration came in. For me, it’s really about the script. The script is never about one character. It is always about everybody’s character. In this series, in the adaptation, (everything) is so well rounded and well written. I loved the script. The script is my king,” Kajol shared.
The trailer sees the actor’s character Noyonika Sen Gupta torn between right and wrong as she is hired to represent her husband, who gets caught up in a sex and corruption scandal. The actor was asked about how she got into the skin of the character, given there are so many layers to her.
“It is definitely an evolved character, a very complex character. Also, every woman would identify with this. You may not have gone through the scenario but you do imagine (it). You have thought if it ever happens, what would you do? Secondly, I am an actor, I will do it to the best of my abilities,” Kajol said.
The actor delved deeper into her character and its trajectory in the show as she said, “I also feel this character is better in a web series, as it has an arc. It is a beautiful arc from where she starts out and where she ends up eventually. It’s really that part where you can sink in your teeth. That’s her and I love that part that women will also identify with. That when you are put in front of a choice, and your child is wrong, you will take that side for the right reason. There is no question in your mind of what you will do for the sake of your child, for someone you love very deeply.”
Kajol added that while The Trial is also about the choices one makes. She also lauded the makers for their decision to cast Jisshu Sengupta as the sex offender. The actor said that given he looks like a ‘good man’, people would be shocked to see him in the role.
“You look at him and you’re like, ‘shit ya, he could never do something so wrong.’ And you would be like arre hogaya.. Like in the trailer, his mother says, ‘maaf kar do.’ You actually feel bad for him. Not as a woman, but you do like him.. but then also hate his decisions. Similarly, you will like Noyonika but you would not like some of her decisions. It would look hypocritical that she is saying something, doing something else.”
Jisshu Sengupta cut in to add that The Trial is a ‘very human’ show. “All the emotions are very true, very human. The choices we make and what we don’t, this show is about that,” the Bengali superstar said.
The Trial will drop on Disney+ Hotstar on July 14.
