After the blockbuster success of Scam 1992, Hansal Mehta is all set to return with the next season. Titled Scam 2003 – The Telgi Story, the series will delve into the life of Abdul Karim Telgi, who earned a fortune by printing fake stamp paper. A teaser of the show was released by SonyLIV on Friday, and from the look of it, the series promises to be an intriguing affair.

The opening of the teaser reminds the viewers of the country’s ‘biggest financial scam’ as it shows flashes from the hit 2020 series Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story. Next, it introduces the viewers to the scam of 2003, when in the “country of mathematicians, there was a scarcity of zeroes”. Then a voice reveals it was a scam of Rs 30,000 crore as the shots of piles of stamp papers appear on the screen.

While it is already known that the series will delve into the story of Abdul Karim Telgi, the makers have refrained from showing the face of the lead character yet. They have only hinted at how he thought as he says in the teaser, “I have no desire to earn money, because money is not earned, it is made”, and “If you want to progress in life, you must dare darling.”

Scam 2003 – The Telgi Story is directed by Tushar Hiranandani. It has been adapted from the Hindi book Reporter ki Diary, authored by journalist Sanjay Singh, who broke the scam back in the time. Acclaimed Marathi writer Kiran Yadnyopavit has also developed the show along with Singh.

The official logline of the series read, “The story of one of India’s biggest scam by Abdul Karim Telgi, which shocked the nation with its unimaginable scale.” It was earlier announced that veteran theatre actor Gagan Dev Riar will play the lead role of Telgi in the series.

Produced by Applause Entertainment in association with StudioNEXT, the series will start streaming on SonyLIV from September 2.
