When Telugu star Venkatesh Daggubati and nephew Rana Daggubati’s Netflix series Rana Naidu released, a certain section of the audience didn’t approve of the foul language Venkatesh’s character Naga Naidu used, owing to the strong family man image the actor has in Telugu cinema. However, the series is running successfully on the OTT platform. Actor Nani, whose upcoming release Dasara received 36 cuts with a U/A certificate, applauds Venkatesh and Rana for doing something out of their comfort zone.

Nani says that the audience objected to Venkatesh’s onscreen language because they have immense love for the veteran actor. However, the Dasara actor believes that things are changing and even the audience is becoming more accepting of content.

In an interview with indianexpress.com, Nani decodes fans’ objection to Venkatesh’s dialogues in Rana Naidu and says, “It is because they (Telugu fans) have a strong liking for him (Venkatesh Daggubati). We are all changing, we are all doing different things in life. Cinema is evolving, we are evolving. Our technology and phones are evolving. Now it (Rana Naidu) is one of the biggest successful shows on Netflix despite the flak. Whenever anything new happens, there will always be mixed reactions, there will always be something. I am so glad that Rana and Venkatesh garu came out of their comfort zone and did something very shocking.”

Nani’s film Dasara too created buzz with a certain word in the film’s song Dhoom Dhaam Dhoshtam, which sounded like a Hindi cuss word. While the actor explains that the word in Telugu actually is a word used to express challenge, he reveals that while filming, they never thought that this word could be confused for a Hindi abuse.

“We really thought that anyone who knows the meaning won’t say anything. Nowadays everyone is so sensitive and I understand why censor board is also scared. Everyone wants just a reason to point out something in the film, so they are being extra careful. So, we thought why not do this,” shares the actor.

Recently Information and Broadcast Minister Anurag Thakur had spoken about the use of vulgar words in OTT films and shows. According to PTI, Anurag Thakur had said during a press conference, “These platforms were given freedom for creativity and not for obscenity and when one crosses the limit, then hurling abuses in the name of creativity cannot be accepted at all.”

The minister added, “If there is a need to change the rules, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will not hesitate. It will take tough action to stop vulgarity and abusive language.”
