When Nayanthara opened up about her rivalry with Trisha: ‘I don’t think I’ll call her a friend’

In an old interview, at the peak of their perceived rivalry, Nayanthara minced no words while talking about her peers Namitha and Trisha, among others.

The bedrock of Tamil cinema and the associated popular culture is all about duality. We’ve had stars like MGR-Sivaji, Rajinikanth-Kamal Haasan, and Ajith Kumar-Vijay taking over the conversations about cinema at any given point of time. Simultaneously, there were always talks about intense competition between actresses who were either actual professional rivals, or the figment of media’s imagination. Nevertheless, just like we’ve had duality of male actors, there was a distinct duality of female actors too, including the likes of Simran-Jyotika, and more recently, Trisha-Nayanthara.

With almost two decades of experience in cinema, things are all hunky dory between Trisha and Nayanthara, who are still going strong with marquee films to their names. However, there was a time when this rivalry made headlines. In fact, there is a popular comedy scene featuring Vadivelu where their names are referenced in jest by the legend. Nevertheless, back in the day, at the peak of their perceived rivalry, Nayanthara, in an interview to Vijay TV in the late 2000s, minced no words in talking about this issue, among others.

First up, when asked if there is a reason behind the love-hate relationship with mainstream media, Nayanthara said that it mainly stems from her reluctance to give many interviews. “I think that doesn’t go down well with many, and they go on to term me as arrogant, etc… My point is rather simple… I only talk when there is something that is worth talking about. I do give interviews when there is a release of a film, and if there is any issue that needs clarification. Otherwise, what new can I talk about in an interview?” asked Nayanthara, who reiterated the support she has always received from the media.

Getting to the question of her ‘issues’ with female colleagues, Nayanthara pointed out that she has a purely professional relationship with most. However, she also opened up about the issue surrounding her tiff with her Billa co-star Namitha. “Honestly, in the first few days, we didn’t have any problems, and we used to speak normally. All of a sudden, one fine day, she stopped talking to me. In fact, if we were all in a group, she would say a hi to everyone but me. There was no fight or argument, but when it happens suddenly, I felt it too. If they have a problem, it is their problem,” said Nayanthara.

Interestingly, when asked about her ‘friendship’ with peers like Trisha and Shriya Saran, Nayanthara candidly shot back, and said, “Friends is such a big word to use flippantly. I am not friends with Trisha… we are acquaintances. There does seem to be problems between us, and it is almost like the age-old belief that women don’t gel with other women. But honestly, I have no problems with her or anyone,” said Nayanthara, who immediately added that it is not her place to go out of her way to sort things out.

“In this case, I came across articles about catfights between Trisha and me, with respect to competition, and other problems… but there was nothing. At least nothing that needed to make it to the papers,” said Nayanthara, who signed off by simply saying, “If someone doesn’t like me, then I don’t like them either. That’s all.”
