Tamil star Vijay Sethupathi shared candid insights into his career choices and his stance on certain types of roles. Known for his versatility and powerful performances, Sethupathi revealed the reasons behind his decision not to accept antagonist and supporting roles any more. Despite a lot of criticism from his fans, Sethupathi made many special appearances in films like Uppena and Michael. He also played the antagonist in Vijay’s Master, Kamal Haasan’s Vikram, and Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan.

In an interview with Hindustan Times, Sethupathi claimed that his performances were overlooked, despite the effort being on par with that of the heroes. When asked if he has a list of stars he aspires to work with in Tamil cinema, Sethupathi responded with honesty. “No, I think I’m fatigued by those kinds of films,” he stated

He explained, “This is because I’ve had some good and bad experiences in the Indian film industry. When you sign on a film with another star, you obviously know what you are signing on for in terms of the role. But sometimes, no matter how hard you’ve worked and done well, there’s very minimal value given to this at the end of the day. Because you contribute to the film as much as the star but no one talks about it.”

Sethupathi also addressed his decision to step away from villain and guest roles. “Yes, I first said this during the promotions of Merry Christmas that I don’t want to play villain roles and guest roles going forward,” he confirmed. He elaborated on the reasoning behind this choice, “I have turned down many such roles in recent times. When you do multiple roles in the same space (antagonist), then there are also limitations and comparisons to your earlier films and performances.” Notably, His roles in Master as Bhavani and Sandhanam in Vikram were criticized for being similar, and it was rumoured that Sethupathi was initially hesitant to take up Vikram for the same reason.

Sethupathi will return to the silver screen in his 50th film Maharaja. Directed by  Nithilan Saminathan of Kurangu Bommai fame, the film has Anurag Kashyap in a pivotal role. Sethupathi also has Viduthalap Part 2 in his upcoming line-up.
