Leo box office collection Day 1: Vijay-starrer delivers biggest global opening of 2023, beats Jawan, Adipurush and Jailer
Leo box office collection Day 1: The Vijay-starrer Leo has delivered the biggest global opening gross across all Indian film industries, out-performing the likes of Rajinikanth's Jailer, Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan and Prabhas' Adipurush.

The Vijay-starrer Leo was released in theatres on Thursday, and has delivered the biggest worldwide opening of the year across all Indian film industries. As per the production company behind the film, Seven Screen Studio, Leo grossed Rs 148.5 crore worldwide gross on its opening day. The Prabhas-starrer Adipurush had also started its journey with the same number, but the film went into a free fall after the first weekend. The next spot is occupied by Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Jawan which grossed Rs 129.1 crore on its opening day. Jawan, which had a pan-Indian release, is currently the highest earner of the year across all languages in India. The Atlee film has made Rs 1140.5 crore worldwide gross.
Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Leo was released amid many controversies surrounding its release in the Hindi and Telugu belts. The film made Rs 63 crore nett in the domestic market and Rs 74 crore gross in India – both these figures are lower than Jawan. Tamil Nadu, which is the primary market for Vijay, did not hold any early morning shows and the film grossed Rs 30 crore gross, followed by Rs 15 crore gross in the Andhra Pradesh-Telangana market. In Karnataka, the film grossed Rs 14 crore on the opening day, and in Kerala, Leo grossed Rs 11 crore (a record).
Leo enjoyed 86.92% Tamil occupancy on its opening day, with the morning shows witnessing almost 86.35% occupancy and the night shows getting over 90% occupancy rate. The Vijay-starrer has 1282 shows in Chennai, but it is yet to be seen if the film can keep up the momentum it has generated on its opening day. Tamil-language films tend to be frontloaded, because distributors reportedly include pre-release revenue in opening day collections.

Previously, trade analyst Ramesh Bala had predicted that the film could do over Rs 100 crore worldwide on its opening day, a number that the film has easily surpassed. “In India, I predict there is a chance of it doing Rs 70 crore on day one. Worldwide, it might do Rs 100 crore on the opening day, based on the current estimation,” he told indianexpress.com.
Vijay’s Leo has already left behind Rajinikanth’s Jailer, which was the biggest Tamil film of the year previously. Vijay is coming off of a run of hits, which includes Master, Beast, and Varisu. Leo is a part of Lokesh Kanagaraj’s shared cinematic universe, which also includes Kaithi and Vikram.
