Ilayaraja sues Dude makers over the use of song ‘Karutha Machan’ in the Pradeep Ranganathan blockbuster

Illayaraja has filed a lawsuit in Madras High Court against the makers of Pradeep Ranganathan's Dude over the use of the song "Karutha Machan" song in the film.

The legendary music composer Ilaiyaraaja has entered into a legal battle with Mythri Movie Makers yet again for the film Dude. The composer, who had a favorable verdict from the courts upon his request to remove his song from Ajith Kumar starrer Good Bad Ugly, also bankrolled by Mythri Movie Makers, which resulted in the film being pulled from Netflix during its streaming run. The same studio has been sued by the composer for their latest blockbuster, Dude, starring Pradeep Ranganathan in the lead role. The composer has sued the makers for the unauthorized use of the needle drop ‘‘Karutha Machan’, which he composed for the movie Pudhu Nellu Pudhu Naathu (1991), which was directed by Bharathiraja

Ilaiyaraaja filed a lawsuit against Sony Music Entertainment India, Echo Recording Company, and Oriental Records in the United States over the unlawful use of his song in Dude.

According to the Times of India reports, the hearing that happened today under Judge N Senthilkumar at the Madras High Court heard arguments from both concerned parties in the case. Ilaiyaraaja’s team argued that Sony had still not responded to the issue and that the filmmakers were still using the song in the film Dude, which is running successfully in theatres.

The music label was asked by the Madras High Court to submit the details of their income derived from the commercial use of Illayaraja’s catalogue under their name. The hearing has been set for next month on 19th November, with Ilaiyaraaja permitted to continue his legal battle against the makers of Dude. The song ‘Karutha Machan’ is used in a humorous reference during the interval sequence of Dude, involving a dance sequence at a wedding function featuring both Pradeep Ranganathan and Mamitha Baiju. Dude has currently crossed Rs 50 crore collection from the domestic market in its fifth day at the box office.
