Amaran director on the film’s connection with R Madhavan, and Indhu Rebecca Varghese’s one request: ‘A rooted Tamil actor should play Mukund’

Amaran director Rajkumar revealed that Major Mukund was fondly called Maddy because of his resemblance with the Alaipayuthey actor, and the name stuck to him.

In a few days, Tamil cinema would see the real life story of late Major Mukund Varadarajan unfold on screen through Sivakarthikeyan’s Amaran. The film, directed by Rajkumar Periasamy, stars Sivakarthikeyan in the role of the Ashoka Chakra awardee, and features Sai Pallavi in the role of the Major’s wife Indhu Rebecca Varghese. In the promotional drive for Amaran, director Rajkumar, who built this film from the book India’s Most Fearless – True Stories of Modern Military Heroes, written by Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh, shared that Major Mukund Varadarajan was christened Maddy by his Commanding Officer Colonel Amit Singh Dabbas.

Rajkumar revealed that Major Mukund was fondly called Maddy because of his resemblance with the Alaipayuthey actor, and the name stuck to him.

“It became his call sign in the army. He was Maddy for everyone. When we were casting for the role of Major Mukund sir, the only thing Indhu wanted was to cast someone who had strong Tamil roots,” said Rajkumar, who added that it was this search that resulted in Sivakarthikeyan

Apart from Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi, Amaran also stars Rahul Bose, Farzi-fame Bhuvan Arora and Geetha Kailasam in pivotal roles. With music by GV Prakash Kumar and cinematography by debutant CH Sai, Amaran, backed by Sony Pictures and Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International, is set to hit the screens on October 31.
