Warrant

Rahul does not belong to any extremist or terrorist group. He does not make any ransom demands either.

It is not clear why this film is called Warrant except that there is a ‘warrant’ issued for the arrest of the hero Rahul (Joy Mukherjee). He has kidnapped Sanchita (Priyanka) and her kid sister, daughters of the state’s home minister (Biswajit Chakraborty) from a shopping mall along with two of goons. The script takes the audience on a very long drive, literally, with the hero trying to tell us why he has kidnapped the two girls.

Rahul does not belong to any extremist or terrorist group. He does not make any ransom demands either. Yet,he carries very sophisticated and modern arms to fulfill his mission and keeps driving through some forests and cares two hoots about the little girl’s sudden asthmatic attack.

Of course,Sanchita and Rahul fall in love and go through the extremely incredible dream song-and-dance sequence routine that sticks out like a sore thumb in this purportedly action drama.

The time and energy spent on trying to locate the whereabouts of the kidnappers and the kidnapped reflects rather poorly on the home minister and his ministry’s efficiency.

Rahul wants the minister to go through the shock and fear of losing his dear ones. Fact is,when he returned to his widowed mother (Soma Chakraborty) in the village to surprise her with his top results at the engineering exams,he finds the entire village slaughtered by the police to ‘clear’ it of ‘extremists.’

However,Rahul and his goon friends along with the two girls take refuge in a beautiful bungalow owned by an elderly lady (Anamika Saha) who requests them to release the girls but they refuse.

One of Rahul’s friends, both engineers who do not behave like they are highly-qualified,also falls in love with a rustic Santhali girl who also reciprocates her feelings.

Joy Mukherjee has an impressive screen presence and has potential as we have seen earlier. But he is wasting himself in inane films with sketchy roles.

Ratings: The two stars are for the beautiful locations chosen by the director where most of the action takes place and for the good performances delivered by Priyanka,Biswajeet Chakraborty and Anamika Saha.
