Malayalam cinema’s fixation on newsrooms and the life — read struggles and arrogance — of journalists is not something new. One of the biggest hits in the history of the industry, New Delhi (1989) starring Mammootty, narrated the story of a scribe and his newly floated newspaper. Movies such as Pathram (1999), Utharam (1989), Love 24X7 (2015), Swa-le (2009), Calcutta News (2008), Run Baby Run (2012), Naradan (2022), and Passenger (2009) also had journalists as pivotal characters.

The latest addition to this list is VK Prakash’s upcoming film, Live, the trailer of which dropped a few hours ago.

Starring Mamta Mohandas, Soubin Shahir, Shine Tom Chacko, and Priya Prakash Varrier among others, Live is slated for release on May 12.

The 112-second trailer of the film is filled with nail-biting moments. The promo video starts with the Mamta narrating how she faces harassment on a daily basis with men sending her lewd messages every night. A doctor by profession, she soon goes live on Facebook, requesting everyone to “stop it”.

The trailer, accompanied by thrilling background music, immediately shifts to top gear and gives viewers a glimpse into the world of media that ‘manufactures’ news and changes the fate and lives of the people around it. “What all are they weaponising to target a woman? Are women the only ones destined to face these,” Mamta’s character asks towards the end of the video denoting that the film could centre on media trials of people, especially women.

Known for his unconventional filmmaking style and his dalliance between commercial and independent cinema, V K Prakash’s last directorial venture, Oruthee, starring Navya Nair, Saiju Kurup, and Vinayakan, had received positive reviews from critics. However, the film failed to make a profit in theatres.

While the story of the film is penned by S Suresh Babu, the flick is produced by Darrpan Bangejaa and Nitin Kumar.
