Mohanlal on collaborating with Sathyan Anthikad for Hridayapoorvam: ‘No one would be gutsy enough to take on such a story’

In a recent interview, Mohanlal spoke about his enduring partnership with Sathyan Anthikad, with whom he has delivered numerous critically acclaimed and commercially successful films.

After kicking off 2025 with back-to-back blockbusters like Empuraan and Thudarum, Mohanlal is now gearing up for the release of his long-time collaborator and friend Sathyan Anthikad’s latest film, Hridayapoorvam. In a recent promotional interview, Mohanlal spoke about his enduring partnership with Anthikad, with whom he has delivered numerous critically acclaimed and commercially successful films.

Speaking to Mathrubhumi, Mohanlal said, “I have been working with Sathyan sir for more than 40 years. We started our journeys together, and I consider it a great privilege to once again play the leading man in his latest film.” Addressing the gaps in their collaborations, he explained, “The gap is mainly because I tend to do a larger number of films back-to-back, whereas Sathyan sir takes more time with his projects. With Hridayapoorvam, what’s most exciting is that Sathyan sir has chosen such an interesting and refreshing subject.”

Mohanlal also reflected on the reason he and Sathyan Anthikad decided to collaborate on a different kind of film like Hridayapoorvam. He said, “We don’t have artistes anymore who could pull off films like the ones we made back in the day. Sathyan sir was able to think in a new direction, even with respect to the cameraman and music director. He brought in new blood for the film. Usually, we shoot our films in Kerala only, but this time he placed the story in Pune.”

The actor added,” The premise he has chosen for this movie (Hridayapoorvam) is also very different. By all means, Sathyan sir has managed to reach a new space with this film. No one would be gutsy enough to take on such a story these days. The emotions in this film will be very different. It is a feel-good film and brings happiness in the season of Onam.”

Mohanlal further recalled how they spent their free time on the sets of Hridayapoorvam. “We talked about old actors and the kind of cinema we made back in the day. We used to have so much fun working on those films. Sathyan sir is someone I can truly open up to and share these memories with. The person we spoke about the most was our dear colleague Innocent, who is no longer with us. We also remembered wonderful colleagues like Nedumudi Venu, Sankaradi sir, and Bharath Gopi sir. We reminisce about all those good times we had working together.“
