In a significant development in the sexual harassment case filed by Malayalam actor Honey Rose, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has reportedly detained entrepreneur Boby Chemmanur, the chairman of the business conglomerate Chemmanur International Group. Chemmanur was, according to news agency PTI, taken into custody in Wayanad on Wednesday after being charged under non-bailable sections based on Rose’s complaint. The Kerala police constituted the SIT on Tuesday to investigate the allegations levelled by the actor. In a recent social media post, Rose had accused Chemmanur — without initially naming him — of making “repeated sexually coloured” remarks against her.

According to Asianet News, Chemmanur was detained while he was en route Coimbatore for the inauguration of a new jewellery showroom. He is expected to be taken to Kochi soon, where his formal arrest will be recorded. On Tuesday evening, Rose had reportedly communicated with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the state police chief. She later disclosed that the CM had assured her of strict action against the accused person(s).

Following Chemmanur’s detention, Rose expressed both relief and satisfaction over the police action. “I firmly believe that I live in a state with a government and a police department that protects me. That is why I have come out to fight. The cyberbullying I experienced was so worse. Despite being told many times not to repeat it, it continued. I see it as an attitude and superiority of showing that he has money. Everything needs an end. That is why I decided to come out to fight,” she said in a statement issued to Mathrubhumi News.

“I am incredibly happy. Beyond happiness, I feel like a huge weight has been lifted from my head. Ever since I filed the complaint, I had expressed my desire to talk to the Chief Minister. I got the opportunity to do so. Then I told him about the troubles I and my family had faced. He had said that action would be taken. He had also spoken to the DGP (Dr Shaik Darvesh Saheb IPS) and other police officials. They had all assured that they would handle it properly. The reason why action was taken so quickly is because there is an efficient system here,” she added. Rose also noted a visible improvement in the tone of comments on her social media since the complaint and subsequent police action.

On Sunday, Honey Rose had alleged via social media that a person — whose identity she initially withheld — had been making derogatory and veiled comments about her, as well as persistently stalking her. Following offensive reactions from some netizens to her post, Rose approached the police the same night and filed a formal complaint.

Based on her plaint, the Kochi Central Police registered a case against 30 persons and arrested one suspect, identified as Shaji, a 60-year-old man from Panangadu.
