Empuraan teaser: Putting an end to widespread anticipation, the first official teaser of director Prithviraj Sukumaran’s third directorial venture L2: Empuraan has been released, promising that the actioner will be bigger, bloodier and more brutal than anything Malayalam cinema has seen so far. Starring Malayalam superstar Mohanlal in the lead role, Empuraan serves as the second chapter in a planned trilogy that began with Lucifer (2019). Malayalam megastar Mammootty unveiled the teaser on Sunday at a grand event, attended by Mohanlal, Prithviraj and others.

The 143-second teaser begins in the war-torn town of Qaraqosh, Iraq, and when the shot transitions, the phrase “Death to the Evil” appears in the background. As the teaser unfolds, we hear PK Ramdas’ (Sachin Khedekar) advice to Priyadarshini (Manju Warrier) from the first film: “If there comes a day, when you feel that everything around you is falling apart, and if I am not alive then, there will be only one person you can turn for help. Stephen!” The scene then transitions to a shot of Stephen’s black Ambassador car, draped in an old, dusty cloth, suggesting his prolonged absence from there. Soon after, we get a glimpse of where he might be now.

“He leads the most powerful mercenary hit group in Asia,” the teaser reveals, adding that “their presence is apparent all over the world.” As the promo displays what appears to be the symbol of the Eye of Providence, Khureshi Ab’raam (Mohanlal) makes his dramatic entrance, cautioning everyone, once again, about the dangers of making a deal with the devil.

Bankrolled jointly by Antony Perumbavoor and Subaskaran Allirajah under the banners of Aashirvad Cinemas and Lyca Productions, respectively, the film’s shoot was completed on December 1, 2024, aiming to release the movie on March 27, 2025. Notably, the teaser was launched on Sunday to mark the 25th anniversary of Aashirvad Cinemas.

Alongside Mohanlal, who returns as Khureshi Ab’raam aka Stephen Nedumpally from the first film, Empuraan will feature Manju Warrier, Indrajith Sukumaran, Tovino Thomas, Saniya Iyappan, Saikumar, Baiju Santhosh, Fazil and Sachin Khedekar reprising their respective roles from Lucifer. Written by Murali Gopy, the film’s technical team includes cinematographer Sujith Vaassudev, editor Akhilesh Mohan and music composer Deepak Dev.

Recently, director Prithviraj had provided updates on Empuraan’s release plans via X (formerly Twitter). When a netizen asked whether the film would have a flat ratio version for both EPIQ and IMAX formats, he clarified, “Empuraan was not shot with full format lenses. I’d like to stick to anamorphics and 1:2.8 aspect ratio for all 3 films of this franchise.”

Talking about the project, writer Murali Gopy revealed that Empuraan would be a standalone film in the three-instalment franchise. “Lucifer will have a third part for sure. Empuraan is a movie packed with good content and a pan-Indian theme. Even though it offers maximum entertainment, Empuran stands firm on content,” Murali said during a session at the Kerala Literature Festival.
