Gift marks Puthren’s return to the Tamil film industry. His first film Neram (2013) was a Malayalam-Tamil bilingual. He also helmed the segment Eli in the Tamil anthology Aviyal (2016).

Alphonse Puthren’s last film Gold, starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, Nayanthara, Deepti Sati, Mallika Sukumaran, Shammi Thilakan, Lalu Alex, Baburaj, Ajmal Ameer, Shanthi Krishna and Jagadish, among others, had released in December last year to poor reviews. Gold was his much-awaited comeback to the Malayalam film industry after a gap of seven years, and there was a lot of expectations from it. However, the film failed to impress the audience, unleashing a barrage of online abuse against Puthren.
