The original film, starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Freddie Prinze Jr, was about a group of high school teenagers.

Sony Pictures has roped in ‘Oculus’ co-writer and director Mike Flanagan and partner Jeff Howard to adapt the 1973 book once again, reported Deadline.

Neal Moritz, who produced the original film, will also return for the project. The thriller tells the story of four teens who accidently run over a pedestrian. To avoid getting into trouble, they dispose of the body into the water.

But just when they get comfortable, an anonymous letter appears with the message, “I know what you did last summer” and they start getting followed by a shadowy figure wielding a hook.

The film was a surprise hit at the box office despite mixed reviews and earned more than USD 125 million.
The reboot is tentatively slated to release in 2016.
