Speed breaker

Bollywood actress Esha Gupta is set to host a luxury car show, talks about super cars and mean machines.

The producers of the show wanted me to drive the luxury cars during the show, but I refused. I was too scared to handle these 20 crore worth babies

You are busy with your Bollywood assignments, what made you drift away into the television space, all of a sudden?

Bollywood is my top priority, but then,it is not everyday that one gets an opportunity to be a part of a show based on super cars! When this project was offered, the car fanatic in me just woke up and I pounced on the opportunity.

That apart, the person who manages my work is my closest friend. I always consult him, before taking up anything. Since he gave me a go ahead, there was no looking back.

What does each episode of Nat Geo Supercars feature?

Each episode will focus on one beauty. And with beauty I am not talking about me (laughs). People are going to explore in detail one particular brand of a luxury car in each episode. The show,a sheer treat for car enthusiasts, will take a look under the hood of some of the most unique automobiles made by mankind. From the blueprint and craftmanship,to testing and thrill, the show will get personal with these gorgeous machines, some of which include BMW X3,Corvette ZR1 and Williams F1. The show will cover all aspects from the colour of the car,to its interiors, the mechanical and technical aspects, how much they cost and will also inform you where these cars are made. It is a show that caters to all the automobile maniacs and educates them about the science and technology and even gives them the behind the scenes manufacturing stories of the most sought after icons.

Were you inspired by the previous season of the show, which was hosted by Rajeev Khandelwal?

I have seen some portions of the previous season. I was not completely inspired as such because this time the content of the show is going to be a little different. Boys have always played an important part when it comes to automobiles, this time it was a woman hosting a program based on the mean machines. I have tried to present the show as differently as I can,and have introduced some sexy and glamorous portion to it,in my style. People say women are never interested in automobiles, but I am going to prove them wrong!

Do you drive? Tell us some interesting behind the wheels personal experiences.

I am a Delhiite,so I learnt to drive in the Capital. I was really young when my cousin trained me on a Maruti Esteem. Now that I am settled in Mumbai,I hardly drive! When I was new here,I drove only once or twice in the vicinity where I reside. It’s difficult driving in Mumbai. When I go to Delhi,I drive my dad’s BMW. Recently,I bought my first car,Skoda Superb.

Where have you shot for the show?

The show has been shot entirely in Mumbai studios. Shooting on the crowded streets of Mumbai would have been difficult,as you cannot block the roads while shooting for a long time. Studios were the best option for us.

Will we see you driving any of the luxury cars on the show? Any favourites that you can pick from the line up?

No way,the thought itself is very scary. They wanted me to drive during the show, but I refused. First of all,we were shooting in a studio, where there was a space crunch and the thought that I would press the gear a little too hard and ram the 20 crore baby into the wall was frightening!

So is Nat Geo the first channel that came to you with a television project?

I got a couple of opportunities but nothing that interested me. This show sounded promising as it was going to portray me in a glamorous avatar amidst these expensive babies! Plus,I was learning so much about these luxury cars. I took it as an informative journey and went ahead with it.

Any Bollywood personality with whom you would like to go on a long drive?

My all time favourite Bollywood actors are Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan. So,whoever agrees,I will go out with him on a long drive.
