Music review: ‘Gori Tere Pyar Mein’,losing steam
There would have been more hue and cry over Tooh a Punjabi slang for the booty.
Film: Gori Tere Pyaar Mein!
Music: Vishal & Shekhar
Lyrics: Anvita Dutt,Kausar Munir & Kumaar
ratings: **
There would have been more hue and cry over Tooh a Punjabi slang for the booty for objectifying body parts (a paragraph goes onto describe it as gore gore, naughty naughty, round round tooh),but for the clever use of women read lyricist (Anvita Dutt),singers (Mamta Sharma and Shruti Pathak) and a star performer,Kareena Kapoor. But if you are ready to overlook the lyrics,it is an enjoyable, silly song. It works for a groovy hook, sung with great fervour by Mika. The antara portions, however, are a drag. Next up is Dhat teri ki that starts suspiciously similar to Daft Punks Get Lucky, but its ambitions are far removed than that of the avante garde French electronic duo. This ones a sleek, pop number designed for the dance floors. There is no substitute to a catchy central tune, and it works primarily on that front, ably aided by a peppy arrangement. Till this point, this Vishal-Shekhar-Dharma Productions film album works well in all its bubblegum glory the composers previous album with director Punit Malhotra,I Hate Luv Storys wasnt a bad album at all but its bit of a downhill here onwards, barring perhaps Naina, where the composers make good use of the vocal prowess of Kamal Khan, which rustic voice from their earlier hit Ishq Sufiyana. The simple, odd folksy tune at the beginning is a nice start, but it gets all too familiar after that. Ditto for Dil Duffer; its easy on the ear, clean guitars work well but suffers from over familarity with a zone the composers have inhabited a bit too much. Chingam chabake doesnt sound bad,but is too worn out for any long-lasting effect, despite Shankar Mahadevans characteristic energy. Moto ghotalo is really boring. There is nothing new about the song, the Gujarati sound is plastic and Sukhwinder Singhs vocals cant save it. Gori Tere Pyaar Mein! is a mixed bag. Its dance numbers are frothy fun,and the rest rather insipid.
