The SIIMA Awards 2024, which happened in Dubai, was a grand affair with the who’s who of the South Indian film industry in attendance. Apart from celebrating the acting and technical brilliance of Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada film industries, SIIMA 2024 also served as the launch of the latest season of Celebrity Cricket League. Actor Kichcha Sudeep, who plays for the Karnataka Bulldozers, attended the event, and played an even more prominent role in making it go viral.
In a now-viral clip, Sudeep is seen responding to one of the presenters of the show saying “Kannad” instead of “Kannada”. In a tongue-in-cheek manner, Sudeep said that it is incredulous that a Hyderabad-based person would make this mistake. “I understand when Mumbai people say Kannad. But, as a Hyderabadi, you saying Kannad is not okay,” said Sudeep. Realising the mistake, the presenter apologised, and corrected himself immediately. “Yes, Kannada. Thank you,” said Sudeep with an air of confidence and pride.
This debate surrounding Kannada and the Hindi-cisation of the state has been raging for quite a while now. In fact, Bengaluru is becoming a hotbed of this debate with Kannadigas resisting Hindi imposition, and urging people coming to the city to make an effort to learn the native language. Many language rights activists are heralding this insistence by Sudeep to get the name of the language right as a basic requirement.
On the cinema front, Sudeep, who was last seen in the 2022 film Vikrant Rona, has signed multiple films, including Max, which is scheduled to hit screens this year. He is also reuniting with his Vikrant Rona director Anup Bhandari for Billa Ranga Baasha, and will be headlining projects backed by Sathya Jyothi Films (Kichcha 47) and KRG Studios (Kichcha 48).
