I’m apprehensive about taking up direction: Sharmila Tagore

After enjoying a beautiful innings as an actor,Sharmila now aspires to be a director but is a little apprehensive.

After enjoying a “beautiful innings” as an actor,Sharmila Tagore now aspires to be a director but is apprehensive amidst the new crop of young filmmakers.

“It is a million dollar question for me. I won’t say yes. I won’t say no. It is a huge commitment. Actually, when I see so many committed, wonderful and dynamic young directors, the thought of making a film scares me,” Sharmila Tagore told a reporter in an interview.

Excited about her role in Nagesh Kukunoor’s upcoming film ‘8X10 Tasveer’,she said she had liked Kukunoor’s earlier films like ‘Dor’ and ‘Iqbal’.

“After watching ‘Dor’ I called Kukunoor and told him that I would love to work with him. When he started working on this film he called me back to offer the part, which I readily accepted,” Tagore said.

Cutting the edge over her stereotype image as a traditional mother, she plays an NRI mother to Akshay Kumar,Tagore tells.

“I don’t have unrealistic hopes. The target audience of today’s films are youth and I don’t want to play stereotypes. I have done roles which have Indian ethos but in ‘Tasveer’ I wear trousers and have a western look which is quite different from the traditional roles. So I am waiting to see their reaction,” the actress said.

The actress is doing a film ‘Morning Walk’ with Anupam Kher where she is playing “a well defined character” after her spirited performance in ‘Viruddh’ opposite Amitabh Bachchan.

Talking about young filmmakers like Kukunoor,Tagore said,”he has very modern approach and is very clear in his vision and has the ability to bring the best out of you.”

Her preferred roles include meaty roles in Bengali and Marathi films over the typical mother in Hindi films.

“I played Rahul’s aunt in ‘Antoheen’ and I loved it.

It was a character which was well defined and positive. There was a strength in the character,” said Tagore.

After mostly playing demure and serious roles, the actress now wants to try doing a comedy,”In earlier days the focus was more on drama. Actresses like Meena Kumari and Madhubala were known for their tragic roles. But today comedy has evolved, the quality is really good.

I would love to do a light hearted comedy film like Ratna Pathak Shah’s role in ‘Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Naa’. Which would be a refreshing break,” she added.

Satisfied about the careers of her two children, she said,”I am happy that they are doing well in their careers and the industry has given them the chance. Soha is very hardworking and bright. I am looking forward to her film ‘Tum Mile’,said the ‘Kashmir Ki Kali’ star.
