Vijay Varma says he was ‘bothered’ when women were ‘scared’ of him for playing negative characters: ‘Sunidhi Chauhan said don’t come near me’
At the grand launch of SCREEN, Vijay Varma opened up about playing negative characters and how women were often scared of him because of these roles.

Vijay Varma was present at the grand launch of SCREEN in Mumbai on Friday. Vijay opened up about playing negative characters on screen and how it “bothered” him in real life as well. Vijay shared that “pretty girls and their mothers” have told him they were scared of him, and he admitted that this disturbed him a bit. Vijay has played negative characters in films like Darlings and Pink, and the web series Dahaad.
He said at the event, “Lots of pretty girls and their mothers have told me they are scared of me, and it did bother me. The introduction of extremely diabolical men that I played started with Pink. It was a minor part, but I remember it vividly because it was an all-women screening. All the actresses were present, and I recall seeing people I had only watched on screen before.”
Vijay also shared his encounter with singer Sunidhi Chauhan at the screening of Pink. “Before the screening, everyone was happy, but by the end, some were crying and some didn’t want to leave. I tried to console Sunidhi Chauhan, but she told me, ‘Don’t come near me. I’m very scared of you.’ I was like, ‘Oh my god, what just happened?’ Then the director pulled me aside and told me I did a good job.”
However, Vijay emphasised that he has since changed this image with roles in projects like IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, Kaalkoot and others, which allowed him to break away from playing solely negative characters. Vijay Varma was one of the guests at the unveiling of SCREEN in Mumbai on Friday, October 18. He was also joined by director Rajkumar Hirani at Creator X Creator.

Vijay stepped into the limelight after he played a pivotal role in Zoya Akhtar’s 2020 film Gully Boy. Since then, Vijay has appeared in many films and web shows, playing diverse roles. With Darlings and Dahaad, Vijay came to be known as the quintessential villain but after his portrayal of the character inspired by Captain Devi Sharan Singh in Anubhav Sinha’s IC814: The Kandahar Hijack, Vijay has convinced the audience that he can play the hero just as convincingly.
India’s first and oldest film newspaper, SCREEN, started in 1951. The publication is now being relaunched for the digital audience.
