Vicky Kaushal made an unconventional debut as a lead actor with director Neeraj Ghaywan’s Masaan. It wasn’t the sort of high-profile, glamorous project that aspiring Bollywood actors normally aim for, but it announced Vicky as a talent to look out for. Of course, he has since established himself as a star in his own right, but there was a time when he was struggling in Mumbai, willing to work for free just to get the chance to face the camera.

In an interview with acting coach Atul Mongia on the Artist Collective YouTube channel some years ago, Vicky recalled being ‘ragged’ at an audition for a commercial, where he was made to do push-ups in front of hundreds of aspirants without realising that it was a prank. Vicky also revealed that the first time he faced the camera was for an ‘item number’ in the film Trishna, directed by Michael Winterbottom.

He said, “My first on-camera appearance was in a Michael Winterbottom film. Anurag called me one day and asked, ‘Listen, you want to do an item number?’ I hesitated, but he said it would be with Huma Qureshi, and it would be great. I agreed, and I was confident about dancing until I got on set and saw hundreds of people in front of me, a camera in my face, and Ganesh Acharya looking on. I was overwhelmed.”

He continued, “I got through the song, but then I saw Ganesh Acharya walking over to me. He said, ‘Kid, you danced well, now dance with your face’. I realised I was concentrating so hard that the stress was showing on my face.”

Anurag played a supporting role in Trishna, which featured Freida Pinto and Riz Ahmed in lead roles. He had worked with Vicky on the Gangs of Wasseypur movies, when Vicky was an assistant. The actor was last seen in the romantic drama Zara Hatke Zara Bachke, and will next be seen in The Great Indian Family.
