After starring in two films this year, Vicky Kaushal is gearing up for the release of his much-awaited movie, Sam Bahadur. In a conversation with Anant Goenka, Executive Director of The Indian Express group, and film critic Shubhra Gupta at Express Adda, Vicky, along with Meghna Gulzar, spoke about his journey in the film industry and revealed why he thinks Anurag Kashyap’s Raman Raghav 2.0 was his worst performance ever.
Speaking about Raman Raghav 2.0, Vicky said, “Raman Raghav 2.0 was directed by Anurag Kashyap. It was a very dark film. I was playing a cop which my mother was really happy about. But I didn’t give her the details of what kind of a cop he is. The film was a very dark and twisted tale about a cop and a serial killer. To be very honest, I still feel that that is my worst performance till date because at that time I felt like I haven’t lived through life experiences to get into the skin of the character. That is one role, I feel, every five years of my life, I will play it differently and I will play it better. I come from a protective upbringing and that is not what my character’s life was and at the age of 25, when I was playing that part, there was little bit of the gap that I had to fill to understand.”
Vicky Kaushal also revealed why he calls himself a ‘stubborn actor’. Vicky said, “When I first thought I want to be actor it was when I was doing engineering. I had not graduated. This was in 2007-2008. At that time, I thought that after finishing graduation I am going to pursue acting and not do anything about engineering. At that time, I didn’t have the confidence that I want to be an actor because around 2010, when I started, stars were launched. Today, fortunately if an actor comes in two scenes and he does well in them, people google his/her name. And you get better opportunities after that. When I started this was not the environment, it was not the environment for a film like Masaan to come out.”
He further explained, “What I mean by saying that I am stubborn actor is that when I would go for auditions and say I want this role, I sometimes would receives looks from top to bottom and that’s when I would be even more confident and say, ‘I want to be an actor.’ That stubbornness gave me confidence. I was telling myself do it because you love it and things will change. And things did change.”
Sam Bahadur marks the second collaboration between Vicky Kashal and Meghna Gulzar, following the hit 2018 film Raazi, where Vicky portrayed a Pakistani military officer. However, in this new film, Vicky steps into the shoes of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, exploring the life of the charismatic war hero. The period drama showcases Vicky as Sam Manekshaw and stars Fatima Sana Shaikh as the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Sanya Malhotra takes on the role of Silloo, Sam’s wife.
The film also stars Neeraj Kabi, Edward Sonnenblick, Govind Namdev, and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub in pivotal roles. The film is scheduled for release on December 1.
