Sunjay Kapur’s sudden death in June sent shockwaves across the country. The billionaire reportedly died in England after accidentally swallowing a bee that led to a cardiac arrest. Even as his family was dealing with the grief — Sanjay was earlier married to actor Karisma Kapoor and they have two kids together; he later married Priya Sachdev Kapoor — a battle began over his Rs 30,000 cr estate. Karisma’s children have taken Priya to the court claiming a will that bequeaths everything to her and her children is suspicious. The will reportedly left nothing to Sunjay’s mother Rani Kapur, sisters, or even his children with Karisma. Sunjay’s sister Mandhira Kapur is supporting Karisma and demanding that rights of their mother be restored. In a new interview, she has again launched a fresh attack on Priya.
Sunjay Kapur was the owner of auto components giant Sona Comstar, a legacy he inherited from his father.
Sunjay’s sister, Mandhira Kapur Smith—who has been actively pursuing the case on behalf of her mother and family—recently stated that it was inconceivable for the businessman to exclude his first-born children from his will.
Appearing on the InControversial Podcast, Mandhira said, “They have been in his life longer than he even knew Priya’s name—and he is going to cut them out? His son was his best friend. His daughter was his first love. You don’t go beyond that. Your children are your heart and soul. Even your parents come second after your kids. There is no way in hell he chose his third wife over his two kids.”
She added, “If you knew my brother and saw him with his children, he had eyes only for them. He didn’t look beyond them. What’s happening to those two kids is deeply unfair. And I don’t think something like this should be allowed to happen to an 80-year-old woman and two children. How does someone come in and claim everything?”
Amid the ongoing court proceedings, Sunjay’s mother, Rani Kapur, has also alleged that her son’s will “does not add up.” She claimed that Sunjay’s marriage to Priya Sachdev was far from cordial—one of the reasons she was allegedly removed from key positions in the company. The family has also raised questions about the timing of Priya’s reversal of those decisions, which reportedly took place the morning after Sunjay’s death.
Mandhira went on to express doubts over the circumstances of her brother’s demise. “I don’t believe my brother died of natural causes because, for this to be the first step you take the very next morning after losing your husband—it’s shocking to me,” she said.
She further added, “My brother was a healthy man, and I will get to the bottom of this. If nothing wrong has happened, I will have peace of mind. But I know my brother too well to sit quietly. This has broken our family. Show me the entire coroner’s report—I won’t believe it otherwise. Why was the morning of the 13th so important to get back on the board of Orius? Was the company going to collapse without Priya?”
Claiming long-standing tensions between Sunjay and Priya, Mandhira stated, “Yes, there were many fights from mid to late 2022. I didn’t just hear it from my mother—I heard it from people who worked in the house and even outsiders who witnessed it. What’s interesting is that once I started speaking up, people began calling me to say, ‘We just want to tell you…’ The truth will come out.”
She further alleged that Priya’s removal from company positions in 2023 was deliberate. “She claims there was a restructuring—yes, there was a restructuring to get you out. So who are you kidding? She is so gutsy that she is lying to the court.”
Amid the legal battle, Mandhira has faced accusations of greed. Responding to trolls, she said, “I have not come forward to grab anything from my brother. I am fighting for what this family stands for. And whether people like it or not, this is part of my inheritance and my children’s inheritance. People say the sisters are greedy or the mother should move on—no. The mother gave birth to this legacy. The sisters are Class I heirs. My brother didn’t create this wealth; my father did. This is paid PR. Ordinary people understand what’s happening. She is spending our money to fight us, but it won’t last.”
Sunjay Kapur was married three times. His first marriage to Nandita Mahtani ended four years after their wedding in 1996. He married Karisma Kapoor in 2003, and the couple had two children—Samaira and Kiaan Raj Kapur—before divorcing. In 2017, he married Priya Sachdeva, with whom he has a son.
Following Sunjay Kapur’s death, his children with Karisma Kapoor—Samaira and Kiaan Raj Kapur—along with his third wife, Priya Kapur, approached the court to dispute his will. Karisma’s children have asserted that they did not receive any bequeathal under Sunjay’s purported will, despite being Class I and immediate legal heirs.
Sunjay Kapur’s mother, Rani Kapur—who has also reportedly been excluded from the will—has extended her support to Karisma’s children, echoing concerns over the “suspicious” nature of the document.
According to the will, a substantial portion of Sunjay’s personal estate has allegedly been bequeathed to Priya Kapur and her children—Azarias and Safira, the latter being Priya’s daughter from her previous marriage to hotelier Vikram Chatwal.
Karisma’s children have termed the will “bogus,” pointing to what they describe as “unimaginable errors.” These include the misspelling of Azarias’ name, incorrect addresses listed for Karisma’s children, and a digital trail suggesting the will originated and was stored on a device belonging to Priya Kapur’s associate rather than Sunjay Kapur himself—claims they argue indicate a “digital footprint of conspiracy.”
Meanwhile, Priya Kapur has countered these allegations by stating that Karisma’s children have already received assets worth approximately Rs 1,900 crore from the family’s RK Trust. She has argued that Sunjay therefore deemed it unnecessary to make any additional bequeathal in his will.
