Sikandar box office collection day 11: Salman Khan’s latest bomb still hasn’t passed lifetime collections of Jai Ho
Sikandar box office collection day 11: As Salman Khan's film fades, it will now face tough competition from Sunny Deol's action film Jaat, which hits theatres on Friday.
Salman Khan in a still from Sikandar.AR Murugadoss’ action film Sikandar may have crossed the Rs 100 crore mark at the domestic box office, but for a Salman Khan release on Eid, the expectations were sky high. However, the film has only crawled its way past the milestone, and is unlikely to hit any other as it begins to wane at the box office. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Sikandar added Rs 1.35 crore to its total haul on Wednesday, its 11th day at the domestic box office. This was a minor drop from its Tuesday collection of Rs 1.5 crore. Now, the total domestic box office collection of Sikandar stands at Rs 107.1 crore. Sikandar, which opened at Rs 26 crore on Sunday (March 30), earned Rs 29 crore on the occasion of Eid on Monday.
However, it’s been a downhill journey ever since, as Sikandar dropped to Rs 19.5 crore on Tuesday, and then to single digits (Rs 9.75 crore) on Wednesday. It couldn’t even cross the Rs 100 crore mark in the opening week, and finished at only Rs 90 crore. Over the past three days, it hasn’t managed to go above Rs 2 crore on each day.
The scope for Sikandar to bounce back is over, as Gopichand Malineni’s action drama Jaat, starring Sunny Deol, releases in cinemas on Friday. Produced by Mythri Movie Makers, the force behind the blockbuster Pushpa franchise, it’ll see Sunny return in an action avatar. Like Sikandar, the film is a blend of a predominantly North Indian star and a hit ‘massy’ South Indian director. Sunny reconsolidated his box office prowess a couple of years ago when his Gadar 2, helmed by Anil Sharma, earned Rs 513.75 crore at the domestic box office.
Sikandar, backed by Sajid Nadiadwala’s Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, also starred Rashmika Mandanna opposite Salman, Sathyaraj as the chief antagonist, and Kajal Aggarwal and Sharman Joshi in supporting roles. After Sikandar became one of the most lacklustre Salman Khan releases on Eid, Manoj Desai, Executive Director of Gaiety Galaxy, reasoned why Salman’s film underperformed even on his home turf.
He said in an interview with Vickey Lalwani, “I have gotten reviews from the public, and trade analyst Komal Nahta also told me that, ‘What was the need to kill the heroine so early on in the film?’ ‘What complex did you have?’ And then, when you take the film forward, if you feel something isn’t right… aap kyu asal mein Salman Khan dikhte nahi ho (Why doesn’t the real Salman Khan come forth in the film?),” he said, addressing Salman directly, “I know you will feel bad because of my interview because I am your friend, and Gaiety Galaxy is your second home but I am telling what the public is telling me. I can’t lie because this is what public is saying.”
