Jhund and Sarbjit producer Sandeep Singh recently opened up about his estranged relationship with actor Mouni Roy, who was once among his best friends, and how their equation took a nosedive after he became entangled in the controversy surrounding actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s demise.
Singh, who turned a director with the 2023 film Safed, recently claimed that since his name cropped up in the controversy surrounding Sushant’s tragic demise, Mouni has completely cut off communication with him. In a recent interview with Times Now, Singh, expressing disappointment with Mouni, revealed “I’m deeply hurt by Mouni Roy. She was one of my best friends. She used to follow me on Instagram. We would hang out together and go for lunches and dinners. Whenever she wanted to meet a big filmmaker, I would go with her. I even met her husband Suraj Nambiar long before they got married. When the Sushant Singh Rajput controversy erupted, she was the first one who backed out and unfollowed me.”
Singh opened up about offering his directorial debut film Safed to both Mouni and Sushant’s former girlfriend, Ankita Lokhande. He claimed that two had initially seemed to like the film, however, they backed out of the project following Sushant’s death and the subsequent controversy.
Furthermore, Singh asserted that Mouni not only stopped replying to his messages but she also didn’t invite him to her wedding. “She didn’t have the guts to invite me to her wedding,” he rued. Despite this, Singh said he is going to be there for the Brahmastra actor. “But I want to tell Mouni that if something goes wrong with her, I’ll be the first person to go to her,” he added.
The sudden passing of the Kai Po Che actor, on June 14, 2020, left many in disbelief. Known for his upbeat, humble, and compassionate nature, Sushant’s untimely demise deeply affected the film industry and his devoted fans. Following Rajput’s passing, Sandeep’s connection to the actor was scrutinised when Sushant’s family revealed they did not know Singh. In response to the subsequent backlash from fans accusing him of dishonesty, Singh released alleged WhatsApp exchanges with Sushant’s family to clarify his position.
Sushant’s rise to stardom began with the Ekta Kapoor television series, Pavitra Rishta opposite Ankita. Later, Sushant, who made his Bollywood debut with Kai Po Che!, continued to receive praises for his roles in films such as Kedarnath and Chhichhore (2019). Dil Bechara (2020), his final film, was released posthumously.
