Actor Vrajesh Hirjee, best known for his comic roles, reflected on his experience working on the cult hit Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein. He said that his co-star, Saif Ali Khan, was so taken by his aggression in a scene that he called ‘cut’ and said that he’d actually get violent. The movie featured R Madhavan and Dia Mirza in the lead roles, and was directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, based on his original Tamil film Minnale. A commercial under-performer in its original run, RHTDM was recently re-released to significant success, but it continues to attract controversy for its perceived toxic hero.

In an interview with Digital Commentary, he narrated an incident from the film’s shoot. “I’m a ham sandwich, hamming is my birthright, and nobody can stop me. There was a scene outside the Churchgate station where Saif’s gang and Maddy’s gang have a confrontation. I was wearing very expensive blue glasses. During the scene, I got so worked up, I threw the glasses on the ground. Later, Saif said, ‘I think you broke your glasses, man’.”

Vrajesh continued, “During the scene, in the first couple of takes, Saif called for a cut and said, ‘I’ll kill this guy’. Because I was in it. I was like, ‘Come at me’. We were all in that zone. He told Gautham, ‘He can’t do this’. We’ve all been in that position at some point. I’m not debating morality or political correctness, but we’ve all stood up for our buddies in college. That’s why the movie’s relatable.”

Vrajesh also spoke about the film’s successful re-release, and said that he had a ‘phenomenal’ time working on it back in the day. “It didn’t work initially, but it became a cult hit later. For me, every role is a role. I am actor, this is how I earn a living and feed my family. I try to be sincere with every role. I’m shocked that the movie still resonates with audiences. It is, of course, a very special film. But every film of mine, every role of mine is special,” he said.
