‘Like watching ISIS beheadings’: Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar slammed by Dhruv Rathee, says Aditya Dhar ‘driven by lust of money’

YouTube creator Dhruv Rathee took to his social media to criticise the scale and nature of violence depicted in the trailer of Ranveer Singh starrer Dhurandhar.

YouTube creator Dhruv Rathee has taken a sharp jab against filmmaker Aditya Dhar’s upcoming directorial Dhurandhar, starring Ranveer Singh. The creator, who mostly makes informative videos about current affairs and historical topics, took to his social media and attacked Dhar for the way violence has been depicted in the trailer for the film. The creator also demanded Censor Board to make an example of the film.

Rathee shared his displeasure through a post on X (formerly Twitter) and accused Dhar of normalising violence and poisoning the minds of youngsters. He wrote, “Aditya Dhar has truly crossed a limit of cheapness in Bollywood. The extreme violence, gore and torture shown in his latest film trailer is the equivalent of watching ISIS beheadings and calling it ‘entertainment’. His lust for money is so unhinged that he is willingly poisoning the minds of the young generation, desensitising them to gore and glorifying unimaginable torture.”

The creator also mentioned the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) and asked them to make an example of Dhurandhar. He said, “This is the chance for the Censor Board to show if they have a bigger problem with people kissing or watching someone get skinned alive.” What Rathee is specifically referring to is a scene from the trailer where the antagonist, played by Arjun Rampal, is torturing his enemy by attaching chains to his flesh. Other characters such as the one played by Akshaye Khanna, can also be seen brutally murdering their enemies. Dhurandhar’s trailer dropped yesterday and has been called Ranveer’s most violent film.

Dhurandhar is one of the many new films that have received criticism for the way violence has been portrayed in the films. The first one to really feel the shoe at its face was Nikhil Nagesh Bhat’s Kill. Starring Lakshya Lalwani and Raghav Juyal, the film had high-intensity action scenes which contained a lot of gory and violent moments. Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal also glorified violence and director Sandeep Reddy Vanga also took a stand for it.

While both the films’ action choreography and narrative received praise from a lot of critics, the violence remained a point of contention for many.

The CBFC has been slightly confusing regarding its mandate for what should and should not be a part of an Indian films. While several violent scenes or obscene dialogues find their way to the final cut, kissing scenes and mentions of any religious identities are often cut.

Directed by Aditya Dhar, Dhurandhar boasts an ensemble cast consisting of Ranveer Singh, Arjun Rampal, Sara Arjun, R Madhavan, Sanjay Dutt, and Akshaye Khanna.
