Ranveer Singh received a special honour at the ongoing Red Sea Film Festival, and he made sure to pay tribute to his 'screen idol' Johnny Depp, who was seated in the audience.

The Red Sea Film Festival kicked off its third edition this week, with a slew of international and Arab stars in attendance. India’s own Ranveer Singh was presented with the The Red Sea: Honoree Award by none other than Sharon Stone, who described him as ‘an all-round creative genius’. In his acceptance speech, Ranveer made the rather controversial political choice to vocally voice his admiration for Johnny Depp, who was also in the audience.

“I had the exciting pleasure of meeting Ranveer before, what a great guy. It gives me genuine, great pleasure to welcome him to the stage to receive yet another prestigious award,” the Basic Instinct star said in her remarks. Ranveer seemed flattered, as he went up to accept the award. In his speech, he gestured towards Depp, and said, “I want to go off-script for a moment here. One of my screen idols is in the house, ladies and gentlemen, Mr Johnny Depp. My good sir, I’ve followed your work since Edward Scissorhands and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. What an honour to be receiving this in your presence. Thank you for everything that you’ve unknowingly taught me about the craft, sir. Master of transformation, versatility, something that inspired by you.”

Depp’s career has suffered in recent years due to his involvement in highly publicised legal proceedings against his former wife, Amber Heard, who had accused him of domestic violence. Depp won a defamation lawsuit against Heard recently, and has slowly been regaining composure professionally. He’s at the festival with his new film, Jeanne du Barry.

In an interview with Deadline on the sidelines of the fest, which is in its third year after Saudi Arabia opened its doors to globalisation this decade, Ranveer spoke about taking over the Don franchise from Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. He said that he hopes to put his own stamp on the ‘revered franchise’, and that he understands the significance of having been chosen as their successor. The actor was last seen in the critical and commercial hit Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.

The Red Sea Film Festival opening ceremony also saw the likes of Will Smith, Baz Luhrmann, and a host of other stars in attendance. Last year, Sharon Stone’s reaction to being seated next to honoree Shah Rukh Khan made headlines.
